Early Spring

From tight buds to blossoms in mid February and still blooming at the end of March

You can’t beat hazels for an amazing show in late winter and they are as tough as nails.  The delicate petals roll up in a cold spell and unfurl when it warms up again and their scent fills the garden on a mild sunny day.  Be sure to plant one!!

Don’t forget to spray with dormant oil now.  It helps protect against overwintering insect eggs, scale and fungal diseases.  It should be applied on days above freezing and before the buds break into leaf.  Ideally it needs 24 hours above freezing to dry but that isn’t always possible.  Apply in the morning if possible and it should be dry by evening.

Happy spring!!
